I had a very vivid dream last night that I am curious to explore further. I awoke to find a very large black snake wound around my body from toe to head. I was happy it was black since my first worry was wether it was posinous. It was wound in a pattern around my body like the medical symbol with the snake and staff. At first I tried to sort of just remain relax tranquil and even blissful and for an instant was able to do so. I thought though that the snake would then leave, it did not and I felt its firm body delicately touch mine as it moved up. I then jerked and woke up a bit disturbed by the encounter.
Any ideas on what this might symbolize or mean? The one bit of insight that I have had is that it does seem sexual, but not in the lustful way, but more in the universal sense. Not sure on this though....

jhananda, Thank your for the excellent links. Even this personal dream turns out to not have much connection to the collective symbolism refrenced (though I am coming to see all personal symbology must connect with collective symbology), I am still getting a great amount of interesting information to think about. It seems like the serpent is a very loaded symbol throughout many cultures.
My own connection with snakes has always been one of intense primal response and fascination. If I was to assume a symbolism for a snake for myself I'd say that it is the embodiment of primal energies and life. My coming into contact with a snake in an intimate way seems to say to me that I am coming into direct contact with very primal energies (ie fight, flight, sex). This is why the encounter with the snake in my dream evoked a general sexual, and then fight and flight response. I think that my dream was challenging me to explore these often subconscious reactions further and bring them into my conscious awareness.

Hello Roamer, I agree the snake in your dream was about contacting your deepest primal instincts of fight-or-flight, reproduction and I would add subsistence, because these are the triad of instinctual behavior that all species have. Thus, perhaps the snake in all archetypal models is the same reference to our deepest instincts.
The mystic will have to overcome these deep instincts if he or she is intent upon enlightenment in this very lifetime. Because enlightenment, in part, is liberation from our psychological programming. If so, then what is deeper than our instincts? Nothing.
Best regards, Jhananda
